Omegle started as a text chat, and for a lot of people that is still the best part: no camera, no pressure to look a certain way, just words. OmeFree has a text chat built for the same reason.

You open the page, press Text chat and you are talking to someone within seconds. No account, no app and no camera permission.

Start text chat

How to start a text chat

  1. Open omefree.com/?chat=text, or press Text chat on the home page.
  2. Confirm that you are 18 or older.
  3. Wait a moment while you are matched with the next person in the text queue.
  4. Type your first message. Press Next to move on to someone else.

Text chat has its own queue, separate from video, so people who choose text are matched with other people who chose text.

Why people choose text over video

  • No camera, no microphone. Nothing to switch on, nothing about your appearance to explain.
  • It works in quiet places. On a bus, at a desk, in bed with the sound off.
  • It is easier to leave. Ending a text chat takes one tap and no awkward goodbye.
  • It uses less data. Text works on connections that would struggle with video.

What to type first

Most text chats end after one message because the opener gives the other person nothing to answer. A few that work better:

  • "What is the best thing you ate this week?"
  • "Pick one: mountains, beach or city."
  • "What country are you chatting from, and what time is it there?"
  • "Tell me something small that made you laugh today."

Short, specific questions beat a long introduction. If they answer in one word, ask one follow-up and decide.

If the queue is quiet

At quiet hours there are fewer people waiting, so a match can take longer. Stay on the page for a moment, press Next if you get someone who does not answer, or try again in the evening, when more people are online. If you only want to practise a language, the same applies: busy hours bring more variety.

Keeping a text chat safe

  • Do not share your full name, address, school, workplace or phone number.
  • Do not click links from someone you just met.
  • If anyone pressures you, asks for money or turns the chat sexual when you did not want that, press Next and use Report.

From text to video

If a chat is going well, you can switch to video chat from the home page. Video is a separate queue, so you will meet a new person there rather than continue the same conversation.
